World Hunger Day a reminder not to take food for granted

- Full Tummy Fund supports hungry kids all year round
On World Hunger Day (28 May 2018) people across the globe will be encouraged to stop and think about the plight of millions of hungry people. Shocking statistics will no doubt be circulated and hopefully, serve to inspire people to take action. The Spur Foundation through its Full Tummy Fund will also use World Hunger Day to raise awareness about this important issue.
Of the more than 7 million people in South Africa that go to bed hungry, a disturbing number are innocent children who are members of households that simply cannot provide enough food or proper nutrition. Malnutrition doesn’t only threaten children’s survival, it undermines their ability to thrive and achieve their full potential. Even mild under-nutrition diminishes the capacity of a child to understand and learn.
At Spur Corporation, our concern for kids’ well being has evolved into a full-time effort through our Full Tummy Fund to make a tangible difference in the lives of young children who go to school on empty tummies. (Spur Corporation houses seven restaurant brands, including Panarottis Pizza Pasta, RocoMamas, John Dory’s Fish Grill Sushi, The Hussar Grill and Casa Bella). In line with our core values of generosity and Ubuntu we believe we have a responsibility to give back to the most vulnerable in our country.
The Full Tummy Fund’s motto “Fill a tummy, feed a mind” encapsulates our commitment to the support of families and children in need. Launched in 2016, the Full Tummy Fund aims to aid children’s development during the first six years.
Investing in early childhood development is known to be one of the most effective means of eradicating poverty, the fundamental cause of malnutrition. For this reason, our developmental focus remains strongly on the first 2 000 days, with particular emphasis on early childhood development and nutrition for children from disadvantaged communities.
Throughout the year we are collaborating with various organisations and experts to ensure the effective reach of the Full Tummy Fund. Together with JAM SA the Full Tummy Fund has embarked on a nutritional feeding programme for needy children in eight Early Childhood Development Centres across South Africa to provide more than 73 260 nutritional breakfasts per year.
Through The Lunchbox Fund, the Full Tummy Fund supports nine Early Childhood Development Centres, delivering more than 71 000 meals per year. These meals are distributed monthly with a meal plan to schools in rural Eastern Cape. “As a group with a wide reach we’re taking the long-term view,” says Tara Theron, Full Tummy Fund Manager. “South Africa can only grow if we are able to address the developmental challenges facing its citizens. By starting with children in the first six years of life, we are laying a stronger educational foundation upon which a healthier, more prosperous and better society may be built.”
The Full Tummy Fund will continue to take on the challenge to support and feed future generations every day, not just on World Hunger Day.
And now our customers can also support the good work of our Full Tummy Fund – by purchasing a Feel Good Meal on various kids menus at a Spur, Panarottis and John Dory’s, R2 is donated to the Full Tummy Fund. For every child that enjoys a Feel Good Meal, another child gets access to proper nutrition and a better chance to excel.
