Spur workers receive recognition for academic achievements

April 3, 2018

A group of workers at Spur Corporation’s head office in Cape Town recently received recognition for their participation in a unique Adult Education and Training (AET) programme presented by Media Works for Spur employees. During a “graduation” ceremony, 15 Spur staff members were presented with certificates in recognition of completing different levels of the AET course.

Sinah Blom (40), a cleaner from Khayelitsha says she is very grateful for the opportunity to improve her education. “The chance we get to study and improve our skills is one of the reasons why I love working for Spur. We get time during the week to work on our studies and on Mondays we see a facilitator to help us with individual tutoring.” Sinah is currently busy with the AET English Level 2 course and she’s planning to continue to more advanced levels. “I’ve discovered that I love literature, it’s so interesting and stimulating. It’s not going to end here for me. I’m going to work hard until I reach my full potential.”

Mziwakhe Malamlela (37) from Kuilsriver has been a driver at Spur for 12 years and he has already completed the AET Maths Literacy Level 2 course as well as the AET English Level 4 course. Mziwakhe says the course has been a stunning way to refresh his high school education. “My communications skills have improved considerably. It’s a really good course and the standard is very high. It means a lot that it costs us nothing to improve our education. It’s an opportunity you won’t get anywhere else.” Mziwakhe says improving his academic skills has given him the confidence to climb the corporate ladder. “There are many opportunities to move up in the ranks at Spur and I’ve already looked at available positions to apply for. It’s great to get recognition for our hard work. The graduation ceremony where Pierre van Tonder presented the certificates was really special.”

The initiative is part of Spur’s commitment to helping employees improve their skills and open up further opportunities, says Pierre van Tonder, CEO of Spur Corporation. “It’s wonderful to see the commitment and dedication of our workers to improving their qualifications. They’ve embraced the opportunity and we are very proud of their achievements.”

The Adult Education and Training course is locally developed by Media Works and incorporates the very latest teaching philosophies and methodologies. The content promotes greater learner empathy, high retention, and measurable success and ensures that learners are not just equipped with basic literacy and mathematics skills, but that they also develop life skills to apply their knowledge within the company.
