Operational Presence

Through our sit-down restaurant brands (Spur Steak Ranches, Panarottis Pizza Pasta, John Dory’s Fish Grill Sushi, The Hussar Grill, Casa Bella and Monterey) as well as our fast food and fast casual convenience chains (RocoMamas and Spur Grill & Go) the Spur group provides customers with an inviting eating experience.

Spur Corporation currently has 575 outlets worldwide, with restaurants in various parts of Africa, Mauritius, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. There are 61 restaurants in the Spur Group’s International division, comprising 41 Spur Steak Ranches, 11 Panarottis Pizza Pasta outlets, 3 John Dory’s, 1 Hussar Grill, and 5 RocoMamas.

Having grown into one of the most recognised brands in the country Spur is known as ‘the official restaurant of the South African family’. The group, which was first listed on the JSE in 1986, was restructured in 1999, which resulted in the formation and listing of Spur Corporation, as we know it today.

The group’s operational style is based on the fundamentals instilled by its founder, Allen Ambor, in 1967. This has been refined and improved over more than 50 years and entrenched by the directors and senior executives – many of whom started their careers working in individual outlets. Spur’s operational style is based on people, entrepreneurial flair, customer focus, operational excellence, empowerment and learning, and prudent and considered decision-making.

Spur Corporations Operational Committee meets twice a year to commit to plans for implementing the board’s strategy, identifying and assessing risks within the group, identifying new business opportunities and reviewing performance against key metrics. This committee comprises executive directors, Pierre van Tonder, Mark Farrelly and Ronel van Dijk, and includes heads of all functional areas within the group. The committee is chaired by the group chief executive officer, Pierre van Tonder. Significant matters are raised at board meetings or meetings of board subcommittees.
